Double UPDATE – Garmin has introduced the DC 30 dog collar transmitter + GPS. It fixes many bugs in the old design. It uses a metal plate behind the GPS instead of plastic. The GPS is black instead of orange. The antenna is longer and more flexible allowing greater range and less breakage. And since the GPS hanging by default, the new DC-30 is a small GPS antenna in the dog collar itself facing skyward. Overall, it works best in the country, it adds about 2 miles to your range trackign if you use the car mounted the antenna. These two miles could mean finding your dog. The new kit comes with the DC 30 and costs about $ 60 more than the previous model (it) is likely to be interrupted my dog has a broken antenna and two plastic mounting plates. Note however that the new seal rings did not attach labels or leashes. This means that your dog is wearing two collars when they are monitored, but gone are the days of broken parts and track your dog without the GPS attached.
Update – I ordered the mount antenna car and found the beach phenomenal boost. In CITY range went from. 7 miles 1. 7 miles, almost full 2 Rating mile. In the range country has more than 4 miles. He is the best $ 25 spent over the Amazon price enhancement is strongly reduced over Garmin. If you think you might have to use your 4WD to find your dog, start using the external antenna optional accessory from the beginning.
I got my Astro are about and one month since the beginning of the range of 2 miles was not there (closer to 33. Maximum miles). I checked with a meter pulse HP / Agilent and he was out only 0. 45 watts. 38 seconds, not the rating 2W (and the battery lasted much longer than it should for some reason!). I sent it to Garmin, recovered it and was putting on 2. 2 watts. Range was still disappointing to 0. 6 miles (city – paid – but my Rino do much better and they are not digital!)
Then I found that there are 5 Astro channels which can use two of them are used by all radio jobcom construction, etc. (154. 57 and 154. 600 is the worst and are used in every sense) – my unit was one of the chains that were almost always being use, then use another tool (RF spectrum analyzer) – I found a much better channel and suddenly the city range was 1. 5 miles which was not bad.
Assembly –
You get 2 mounting options – a bracket that will screw up the issuer dog collar which works really well, or in a pocket Velcro to put the device, the strap around the dog’s chest and put a tab under the dog collar to keep it standing. I tried the first option vests and when the dog came back all the company swung around the dog’s neck (and Velcro is filled with hair if your dog sheds – the efficiency of handling tends to zero).
The necklace that I thought was the best, because the labels are always grounded, but now the heavy part is up. I think was a sinker to fishing light in the dogtag strap that held vertically – without the weight of the dog returns with the collar turned sideways and horizontally from the antenna, which affects your range again.
Once factory set at full power, put on a freqency clean and mounted with a counterweight it works really well – 1. 5 mile range of the city and 2. 0 Beach mile or more in the country are not uncommon. I found my dog was left on a five mile pursuit once the truck.
There is a problem in the few pieces that Garmin uses for “state of the dog” as “woody” or “career”, etc. – When the GPS has moved a bit they are meaningless if I ignore that and leave it on the detail page that tells you dog how far your dog is, where it is and the battery level / GPS coverage of the dog, with the radio signal that you have found. I would have preferred a “mobile” or “stable”, you can get from the card if the signal reaches.
You can get a nice VHF (marine type) the antenna if you become bound car and unscrew the antenna and connect garmin external antenna which is more than double range or better now – much to the end of searches per day for the dog. Both the dog and user antennas are SMA and removable unlike Rino that the law must have a permanently attached antenna unless you’re good to weld on your outboard cylinders, which allows large external antennas and amplifiers high-power radio. transmitter to your dog programmed time interval, when the handheld transmitter only when you need to adjust the parameters of a dog, making it a 2way link temporarily on AA batteries.
< br /> The GPS (s) in both the dog and use the pocket very sensitve SIRF chipset (which is very cheap because the entire GPS is a single chip, but because of the ease of use Within it sees fit to charge almost 2x Garmin example, most rino520HCX is also using the SiRF for GPS, which costs less than them) – he negotiated the sensitivity to obtain a signal accuracy compared to their old Garmin 12 channel receiver of fact (like putting a Ford engine in a Corvette). Anyway, they are very sensitive, handheld lets you load the card 2 GB of data on a micro-SD card, such as your phone uses, so there are many interesting features in the game, Furthermore you can use the handheld without dogs. ) I put the road and topographic mapping data of Western United States, with the entire CD roads. I have GPS mapping in my car and Garmin has a really poor algorithm on it – you require the 5 miles back to get on the motorway, 5 miles from the destination before a / 4 mile ahead. It is better for sea or 4 wheel drive that accidents on the road. ON-way navigation is probably a feature to avoid.
My Only “STRONG” negative is that they use 2-AA batteries in the GPS handheld. In the world, is a regrowth of disposable batteries because of the price – countries like Germany and Switzerland charge of the battery to a disposal charge – If you are caught putting them in the garbage for 500 eyes $ fines. Most of Europe has adopted this, hence the switch to Li-ion standards. I have been evaluating prototype 3000-3500 mAh AA batteries in my lab for a battery company. The combination is really good – better than alkaline in all cases. I’m used to cell Li-ion Rino radios I use that last forever. Garmin would have been suitable for some types of Li-Ion battery pack in the battery making it responsible to both charger dog (who is Li-ion) batteries and car charger dog (included in kit). But alas, we are stuck with children’s toys AA batteries.
The seal outlasts rain and bad weather – for you and the dog. Overall, knowing in which direction and how my dog is great information. I have not found geo-fencing, but would be nice to keep your dog away from problem areas on the map as railroads or roads.
In summary you have found 2 very sensitive GPS units (one rechargeable AA and an engine) that communicate in a manner of their location. To top it off the system, Garmin offers a smart box hard to seal and preserve the substance damp cloth soaked in the dryer with a clever strap X support outside of the case
< br /> Remember to run well in the city before you go hunting with him – you know the shortcut keys on the spot, and what the limits are in unity, and that beeps to decode.
Happy hunting!

The transaction has been excellent. . . good price, fast delivery. My husband was very happy with his new “toy”, and could not wait to try it. He was very impressed by the details he has seen during the monitoring of the dogs in the region. However, the first hunting experience with the unit, the dogs were able to disconnect and lose the antenna (which seems to be pretty wimpy!) And of course, the unit is useless without the antenna! When I made a call to order a replacement, I was told that the parties must come directly from the manufacturer. It was impossible to contact someone from the manufacturer, so I resort to ordering a replacement antenna line that I did receive in time for the next hunt. We are now waiting on a response to email from my husband (he also gave up talking to a real person) to complain of the antenna and to ask the manufacturer to provide a free replacement b / c it is ‘expensive equipment and if the antenna is as easily lost (which makes the device useless), I anticipate it will be an ongoing problem and become the “gift that keeps on giving!”.

I bought the astro mainly for hiking with my dog in the wooded dunes of western Michigan. It surpassed my expectations. My dog will be chasing something 200 meters, out of sight and earshot, and it works very well. All the stress and worry of not knowing where the dog is gone. Because my dog does not deviate by more than 200-300 meters, I have not had a chance to test the full range, but within these sites and most rugged terrain, he followed without fail.

First my compliments to Amazon and Garmin for customer service and warranty.
The Astro GPS Dog Tracking System has worked hard in EZ will land, but in much of California, we have few trees hanging, thick bushes and fences. The first time I used it, my dogs were barking a boar Nice 151 yards north-east “. The next time I used it in about two hours hunting scrubland my three dogs fought three antennas and destroyed two beams.
The sending unit with Antena, is owned directly by the beam over and above the shoulders of the dogs, getting hit (and destroyed) when passing through or under obstacles. The mounting of an optional sending unit (the dog’s collar) does not work very well either.
Garmin was great and willingly sent replacement parts free again I sent all the unit back and received a credit. We talked with Garmin TEC and they said they are working on another design. They should also come with a better battery system CAP. I looked forward to new design and reorganization if and when available.
The current system harnesses Antena / probably works well for grassland bird hunting but not hard to cover where the dogs are all To catch a pig.
Hurry Garmin and have it repaired! Maybe if they do not come with another project of a competitor will come with a GPS dog that will stand the test.

I bought this setup Garmin after looking for a GPS tracking system for dogs in the office since long. competing models either require monthly subscription (through a cellular phone system) or were followed dog * only *. The Garmin handheld device is used as a standalone GPS, with the advantage of communicating with the dog from the GPS unit.
I do not hunt, but rather the intention use this option to allow my dog to run freely while walking. He likes to keep rabbits and deer and for the purpose of Astro worked very well. In the field I walk there a lot of vegetation and it can easily be off the site as little as 20 meters. After a very close eye the first time I used it, I think it worked beyond my expectations. . . GPS always gave me a distance and position on the map and the compass is still entitled to it. Occasionally, he would lose GPS reception or RF communcation, but it always came back within 10-15 seconds. I tried both the backpack and collar, and actually did better with the collar even though it would often switch to the side or bottom of his neck. More counterweight would probably, but it is generally done head towards the ground and could easily be a nuisance to him.
Although the unit of dog is supposed to be impervious to water, I did encounter serious problems when he decided to cross a small river. He can not swim and I do not expect to ever have a problem, but this time it was shallow enough to cross him, and he seems to have gotten wet enough for the collar to a problem. I can not determine if the GPS reception was affected or RF communication with the handheld, but he began by saying it was 100-200 meters away, though still within sight . Finally, he glided toward him reports of 600 or even 900 meters away (I could still see it)! The indicator of the compass pointing began in what seemed to be random directions. It took some time (maybe 15 minutes) but after drying it again, the statement is returned to normal and the right away. I intend to investigate what was happening, and I may have a defective unit. My dog has never broken antenna like others are reporting. . . Come to think of it, however, is perhaps * is * broken, and it is simply not visible to me.
Apart from the issues dog collar I like the handheld unit. I am always looking for features that I did not know he had, and it is well beyond my previous model (GPS 12).
