Zoombak’s Advanced GPS Dog Locator

Now here’s a GPS dog collar you can get excited about. I’ve always wanted to see migrating animals on websites, plotted every few minutes, watching where they are heading, and Zoombak’s Advanced GPS Dog Locator can do just that. In fact, it uses detailed maps that can show you where your dog is at any given time. I found it great for those roaming dogs that love to get out of the yard and explore. And it seems that it works best with dogs that are big, around 15 pounds and more. Though the GPS unit is pretty small, the collar may become cumbersome for smaller pets.

One of my favorite features of Zoombak’s A GPS Dog Locator is that you can set up what they call “safety zones” to receive notifications when your dog wanders into or out of them. So for example, you want Fido to stay around your yard, but know he can get out. You set up the yard on the map on the website as one of your safety zones. This is done by locating your address on the map, then setting a circular zone, like a 400 foot circle around the address. When Fido wanders out of that area, the Zoombak will send you a text alert, and an email alert, but I thought the text message was genius. It will let me know when the dog has gone out of my predetermined zone.

Another great feature is the long-life battery. A lot of the GPS units for dogs just don’t hold their charge long. The Zoombak does for up to five days on standby. But I don’t believe you will ever need this because the location is constantly updated and you’ll find Fido quickly. Say he does get out of the yard and you’re alerted. You can then send a text message back to Zoombak and it will automatically reply with the exact location of Fido. So you would start from the house by looking at his current location on a detailed map, then drive out and send texts to get your updates on the road. Before long you’ll spot the dog and be back home.

Problems from customers have been that the alerts sent out had been up to 15 minutes after the dog exited the safety zone. Also there have been complaints that the support staff doesn’t speak American English, so can be difficult to understand. The only other thing I found was that some people would like the unit on the dog to be a little more weatherproof.

Overall, for the price of Zoombak’s Advanced GPS Dog Locator you can have peace of mind that your dog is staying within the zone he is supposed to be in. And you can know that if he strays, it won’t be hard to find him. This isn’t for everyday use, but for when you want to let the dog out to get out in the fresh air, and know that he or she may take off after that far away scent that calls. Look for the best deals online, used and new, and try to find free shipping. Make sure you get a warranty.
